Kevin O'Neill's Mek Memoirs

iconoblast.substack.com

Here are scans of Kevin’ art that got him his job on 2000AD in 1977. The original pages had been locked away in my loft for twenty years and I was delighted to discover them just recently, along with other art I didn’t know existed, and more hardcover copies of Marshal Law I didn’t know I had (I’ll be putting them up for sale on my Gumroad store soon).

I tried showing some of this newly-discovered art on Facebook Live last year, which was an absolute disaster! The tech is far from user friendly. So here they are again in all their glory.

When I started 2000AD, my editor designate, Kelvin Gosnell, said there was a young art assistant on Whizzer and Chips who was desperate to escape the ‘fun’ comic and would love to join us. He had produced a comic called Mek Memoirs with writer Jack Adrian. These are the pages – from 1974! – and they show Kevin’s incredible imagination and first rate storytelling.

It’s amazing to think he was already that brilliant so young. Enjoy!

Thanks for that, Pat. Kevin came into the business fully-formed, as it were.
