Nemesis the Warlock Book 2: Eps 4-10
The Terminators learn their fate – to be stripped naked (or as naked as a comic allows) and to go back to nature. To start again. Considering their crimes, they got off lightly.
I’m blown away by Nemesis the Warlock: the Definitive Edition. My compliments to the publishers, Rebellion, and especially their designer Gemma Sheldrake for the truly inspired front and back covers.
Such a Definitive Edition requires a Definitive Commentary, a companion piece for when you’re looking at the beautiful art by art-creator Kevin O’Neill and the other talented artists that followed him. So it’s time for The Secret History of Nemesis the Warlock, an episode by episode revelation of what really went on behind the scenes.
Episode Four – The Prison Ships
I found the aerial battle a little disappointing: everything lacks a certain panache, but I guess I was spoilt by Kevin’s art.
However the prison ships make up for it. They’re Redondo’s design and perhaps he was more comfortable drawing his own creations rather than referring to Gustav Dore’s. They look wonderfully sinister and we realise where the Terminators are being sent – to the prison planet of the spiders!
I chose spiders because they had to be creatures that would really terrify the Terminators should they attempt to escape. But this was no punitive galactic Belmarsh. If humans changed, they would be in no danger, as we shall see.
The Family of Tomas de Torquemada
As an interlude, we are treated to this amazing pin-up by Kevin of Torquemada’s family. This was entirely his own idea and creation and it’s a classic sf image of a dysfunctional family. It inspired me to write many future episodes.
