Nemesis The Warlock: The Army of Liberation & The Galactic Hitchhiker
I was a little uneasy by the time the aircraft landed in Tehran. I’d brought along a copy of Requiem Vampire Knight and actually ‘censored’ the book myself, just in case I got stopped at Customs.
I’m blown away by Nemesis the Warlock: the Definitive Edition, Vols 1 and 2. My compliments to the publishers, Rebellion, and especially their designer Gemma Sheldrake for the truly inspired front and back covers.
Volume 2 is now on sale from the 2000AD store.
Such a Definitive Edition requires a Definitive Commentary, a companion piece for when you’re looking at the beautiful art by art-creator Kevin O’Neill and the other talented artists that followed him. So it’s time for The Secret History of Nemesis the Warlock, an episode by episode revelation of what really went on behind the scenes.
Episodes 10 & 11: the Army of Liberation
Once again, Henry’s science fiction hardware is superb, easily comparable to the artists in Metal Hurlant. The spider tank is fantastic. I’d love to see it in a movie. In fact, Henry’s style has a French influence, I think, and his inspired petrified city could easily have appeared in Metal Hurlant.
The Terminators that follow are classic racist skinheads who would still have their place in today’s world. What is overlooked is how many middle-class racists support the likes of Tommy Robinson. Thus, about five years ago, Lisa and I went for a drink with a couple of very respectable estate agents who proceeded to sing the praises of Tommy, as well as streaming vitriolic racist abuse about the personal habits and hygiene of Asians.
