I’m blown away by Nemesis the Warlock: the Definitive Edition, Vols 1 and 2. My compliments to the publishers, Rebellion, and especially their designer Gemma Sheldrake for the truly inspired front and back covers.
Volume 2 is now on sale from the 2000AD store.
Such a Definitive Edition requires a Definitive Commentary, a companion piece for when you’re looking at the beautiful art by art-creator Kevin O’Neill and the other talented artists that followed him. So it’s time for The Secret History of Nemesis the Warlock, an episode by episode revelation of what really went on behind the scenes.
Episode 4: The Watch Tower
The show-stealer for me here was the Watch Tower in the Carousel. It’s brilliant. I could run out of superlatives describing it. It’s a new piece of hardware I don’t recall seeing before.
But it reminded me of another artefact we never used in Nemesis and really should have done. The Confessional. How did Kevin and I overlook it? Maybe because we did a mobile confessional in Marshal Law that prowled the red light district of San Futuro: ‘Stop me and confess’. And we did have purity meters in every apartment, which registered impure thoughts. As Torquemada sternly reminds us, ‘Sleep is no refuge for impure thoughts.’ (Kevin’s inspired line.)
