Nemesis the Warlock Book 3 Eps 2, 3, 4
Kevin drew some truly offensive images of Thoth bursting out of the egg which I’m sure will remain in readers’ minds for all time. They certainly did with me.
I’m blown away by Nemesis the Warlock: the Definitive Edition. My compliments to the publishers, Rebellion, and especially their designer Gemma Sheldrake for the truly inspired front and back covers.
Such a Definitive Edition requires a Definitive Commentary, a companion piece for when you’re looking at the beautiful art by art-creator Kevin O’Neill and the other talented artists that followed him. So it’s time for The Secret History of Nemesis the Warlock, an episode by episode revelation of what really went on behind the scenes.
Episode Two – Mendes Castle
We meet the scheming Magna and her father Ashtar, the Goat of Mendes. The visual images are amazing, like a scene out of Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast– the crumbling castle and the aftermath of a banquet.
Ashtar reflects on the good old days, ‘feasting, drinking and dancing for weeks on end. And when it was all over a quick trot round the pentangle would take care of the washing up.’ And one of his parties which lasted for three years!
I was struck by the similarity between Ashtar and the Lord Weird Slough Feg. In Sláine The Horned God, Feg also remembers the good old days and laments how he’s lost his virility and magical power, just as Ashtar does. It seems to be a story sequence I was especially attracted to: writing about people and places where the parade has gone by and characters look backwards rather than forwards.
