Nemesis the Warlock: episodes 7 & 8

I’m blown away by Nemesis the Warlock: the Definitive Edition. My compliments to the publishers, Rebellion, and especially their designer Gemma Sheldrake for the truly inspired front and back covers.
Such a Definitive Edition requires a Definitive Commentary, a companion piece for when you’re looking at the beautiful art by art-creator Kevin O’Neill and the other talented artists that followed him. So it’s time for The Secret History of Nemesis the Warlock, an episode by episode revelation of what really went on behind the scenes.
Episode Seven: Brother Gogol’s Problem
Brother Gogol – ‘voted least likely to deviate’ - realises he is half human, half alien and is terrified of what Torquemada will do to him when he finds out the truth!

But it’s at this point that I start to draw directly on my old Catholic De La Salle school: St Joseph’s College, Ipswich. Brother Gogol is the Prefect of Discipline and this was a title the De La Salle brothers actually used. There were two sources of inspiration, both proven perverts and sadists who were Prefects of Discipline: Brother Solomon who was a minor pop star aka The Swinging Monk (do check out Google images – it’s worth it) and Brother James Ryan. They were renowned for their extreme cruelty, violence, and much more besides. Both had alcohol issues. Much of their appalling character went into Torquemada, too. And into Judge Dredd.
