Requiem Vampire Knight 10: Blood Bath
Why some people are evil and what makes them that way is never really discussed in a sufficiently detailed way to reach a definitive and agreed conclusion.
In this volume, we see the aftermath of Hiroshima. The three American ‘tourists’ being pulled in rickshaws are authentic and the image is based on a photo reference. But any consideration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki makes us think about the origins of evil. Whether there is a place such as Resurrection, where the perpetrators will be punished, which is what so many of us would like to see happen.
Why some people are evil and what makes them that way is never really discussed in a sufficiently detailed way to reach a definitive and agreed conclusion. The possibilities seem endless. And they are all present and incorrect with the evil villains of Requiem 10: Blood Bath.
There are various psychological conditions – like narcissism – that could lead to evil behaviour. Neural ‘differences’ that could produce megalomaniacs. And psychopaths and sociopaths.
Neural ‘differences’ also produce great and wise people, of course.
Then there are social conditions that can be the making of villains. Family dysfunction. Sexual dysfunction. Lust. Abuse. Extreme poverty. Extreme wealth. Extreme greed.
Drugs and alcohol are key factors in evil. As many of us know, people on drugs – and in the grip of a desperate addiction – can completely lose their moral compass, with terrible results.
Empires (especially totalitarian regimes) and nationalism have produced plenty of human monsters. Any attempt at strong social control – like communism and fascism – seems to result in creatures like Stalin and Hitler.
Titled people think they’re entitled to do what they like. I have a particular loathing of Knights and Chivalry. They’re both confidence tricks. Both are justifications for evil.
Science deserves an evil category all of its own. Men in white coats think their status gives them the right to do what they like with the excuse of pursuing knowledge, medicine and research. Including vivisection. Their arrogance is especially obvious. I’ve challenged a few in my time and they absolutely hate it. As do priests – see next section.
