Thanks, Neil. Glad you escaped your teacher. We need to raise awareness on how commonplace dysfunctional teachers are. They are generally presented as well-meaning vocational idealists. That was never my experience at my well-regarded school. (St Joseph's College Ipswich) Most of the teachers were bored and just doing it for the money which was probably poor. Six were sex abusers (4 monks, 2 lay teachers). I'm sure it's better today, but if it is, it just means any new generation of perverts have found some other way of getting to children.
Really appreciate what must have been a tough post to write. Well done for speaking up. A teacher at my old school was recently jailed following the testimony of one brave abuse victim - ten years after the event. The papers said his life had been ruined - I hope he can begin to build afresh.
I suspect an awful lot of people have had similar childhood encounters to varying degrees. In my own case, a primary school teacher who simply HATED me. Luckily he was never one of my regular teachers so our paths crossed infrequently (which only makes his enmity more bizarre).
He was one of these typical 'jack-the-lad' types, playing up to adoration of the crowd as both kids and adults loved him and lapped it up. I never bought into his facade and looking back I realise he knew this and therefore felt he had to big himself up by constantly putting me down. Troubling behaviour for a grown man versus a fucking 10 year old...
Anyway, enough of the therapy session!
