OK. I am flummoxed. Given that I am in IT this may be considered embarrassing but I am not feeling that way. I have claimed and had mined my POAP NFT, and set up a wallet (MetaMask) which I used to claim my attendance POAP. However, after days of trying, I cannot see the NFT in my wallet. I have tried importing several ways but to no avail.

Has anyone else got this working for them using MetaMask?

(Much like Gwyn, I have been avoiding crypto currencies, and blockchain in general, thus far.)

TIA

I can't speak for Gwyn, but my experience with Metamask and POAPs is that the POAP doesn't show up there. Something beyond my ken to do with protocols. The best way to view them is to download the POAP app, and paste your metamask wallet address in when it asks for (IIRC) Eth address. And then it should show up! Sorry for the hassle, Gary! A part of me feels relieved that it's not just me having problems navigating these new cryptowaters. Everything is SO new, there's no familiarity, no precedent.

Here's a snippet of a convo I had with POAP support when I struggled to view the first POAP I minted:

"POAPs are NFT's stored on the xDai Network.

Most wallets are currently unable to display POAPs, but we are working with them to have this functionality added in the future."

Now I have no idea what the xDai network is, but I gather it's something Metamask has trouble accessing. Hence why the POAP app is the best way to see your POAPs.

Thanks Lisa. That makes total sense to me. From my experience this week, it appears that these blockchain technologies don't yet have a user friendly interface. It is a bit like the days of visiting your barber's to get that bit of dentistry that you need :-P

There are different (blockchain) networks that store tokens (be they currency or NFTs etc.) and the transactions associated with them. Currently, getting access to what you have is akin to going to the bank and viewing a hand written ledger. Nowadays we expect any such system to be as easy as using an ATM. Banks still have the same ledgers and transactions, albeit digitized, but we never see them (apart from our personal bank statements). Blockchain networks are open (so you can see all the details of the transactions) but the apps that hide all the necessary details to simplify use is not quite there yet but appears to be coming.

I guess that the security and validity of the system outweighs the usability of it at first.

I think you put it very well. It's like we're seeing all the nasty innards, when I just want a pretty interface :)

I'd love to have a POAP if there are any left.....

We're not sure which subscriber email address is yours, an you drop Lisa a line: lisa at millsverse dot com?

Ossian's avatar

I’d appreciate a POAP if any remain please

Joe Nassise's avatar

If any are still available, I'd be interested in a POAP.

Lisa Mills's avatar

Just emailed you, Joe! Thanks for your support.

Lisa Mills's avatar

Hi Joe, yep, I'll get that over to you shortly! Thanks for your support :)

I guess the only way to see what this is all about is to try and download one of these things. No idea what I'll do with a 'POAP' or even what a digital wallet is... sounds like something Ro-Jaws might have stashed away.

Lisa Mills's avatar

Ro-Jaws would have a #POOPS (Proof of Obnoxious PongS) :D

Just sent you your link, let me know how you get on!

The Hyper Room's avatar

Hi Lisa - we would love a link to the POAP - and also invite Pat to come talk about these plans on our podcast that sits at the intersection of Pop Culture and Web3: www.thehyperroom.com

Lisa Mills's avatar

I'll get that sent to you shortly, thanks for your interest! Pat says he'd be very happy to come on your podcast, but he'd like me to be there too to explain some of the tech aspects. Pat has a background of designing comic games and interactive stories (Diceman), so for him this is an extension of that 'analogue' interest.

I confess to being intrigued. And while writing a piece on Bleeding Cool about exactly this, I guess it is time to turn it gonzo. I would like to claim a POAP

Pat Mills's avatar

Hey Rich, we'll be interested to see your Bleeding Cool piece! I'll ask Lisa to send you the link.

Hi Lisa, I would like one if there's any left, thanks, Stephen

Pat Mills's avatar

Hi Stephen, good to hear from you. Can't match your email to your name on the subscriber list, can you drop me an email at lisa at millsverse.com?

Hi Lisa, I'd love to have a POAP if there are any left.

cheers

Matt

Lisa Mills's avatar

Which Matt are you? Sorry, I have several in the subscriber database! Email me at lisa at millsverse.com :)

Lisa Mills's avatar

Hi Matt yes of course will send that over now!

I did the whole process on my phone using a browser called Brave. I discovered that this has an inbuilt wallet. After setting up the wallet securely (I think) it took me a while to find out the wallets Ether-code. Once I found that, clicking through the link you sent and pasting the wallet’s code took me to a page where the POAP was pending. It still is, so I’ll have another look in a bit.

The tricky bit was that I was starting from scratch. It took me a while to even find my wallet once I’d set it up! If I’m honest I’d be reluctant to commit any money by the process just yet. Maybe 1 or more of these mini-nfts to practice on?

Lisa Mills's avatar

Hey Simon, I think from looking at the back end of the POAPs that you have managed to mint?

Lisa Mills's avatar

Wow I think you're more advanced than me! I'll message the team to see if they know why it's just hanging. Sounds like you've done everything correctly. And I'm going to check out Brave because that sounds cool.

Simon's avatar

I’m not entirely sure what my POAP is, but I’m happy to put my trust in this team. I’m still the kind of reader who prefers hard copies of stuff, although it’s a very fine line between colllecting and hoarding!

I’ve always tried to support the Millsverse materials directly, tempted by the freebies on offer (signed scripts, signed books, free stories and comics). I’ll try and continue to do so, but it proved to be a challenge to mint the POAP so the more instructions you can provide, the better!

Looking forward to the updated history of 2000ad. It’s a shame that Ro-Jaws won’t speak with his creator’s voice again, but the lack of 2000ad strips frees up time to revisit Requiem.

Lisa Mills's avatar

Hi Simon, yes I know you from Twitter and I know you're a long-term reader of Pat's stuff :)

Can you tell me where you got to in the process with the POAP? Did you manage to set up a digital wallet, such as Metamask?

Simon's avatar

Now have a new message. The POAP is currently on xDAI and can be migrated to mainnet.

I don’t know if that’s a good of a bad thing!

Lisa Mills's avatar

AFAIK that's not a crucial piece of information for general users. Have you set up a digital wallet? I think as soon as you have Metamask set up, and you get the chrome plug in for it (you'll see the fox head logo at the top of your chrome browser tab when it's installed), you should be asked by the POAP website to connect your wallet. And the wallet address you give it is the really long alphanumeric string, which you copy from your Metamask wallet.

Does that help or have I made things worse? :D

Simon's avatar

I don’t know! I’m not sure where I’m meant to be looking now! Been busy today, will have a proper look tomorrow.

Simon's avatar

OK, so this is where I've got to.

First of all, the Metamask website throws up a warning from Microsoft about being unsafe. I'm happy to ignore that, but it might put others off.

When I click on the POAP link you sent, it takes me to a page that says "Millsverse Announce Their First Book NFT POAP was added to your collection". But when I click on the link to show my collection, it says "You don't seem to have any tokens."

Going back to my phone, and opening the wallet built into the Brave browser, it only shows me ways of buying crypto - no mention of collections as far as I can see.

Really not sure about where I should be looking for a collection with the POAP in it.

Good news is, if you can help me find a way through this then you'll know your instructions are idiot-proof!

Lisa Mills's avatar

Ok, can you email me your wallet address? The really long alphanumeric number. Then I can confirm whether the POAP was minted by you or not. Then I'll pass your message on to the POAP team to see what they say. Could you also send me a screen shot of both pages: the one that says the poap was added to your collection, and the one that says you don't seem to have any tokens. That should give me all the info I need.

Two more thoughts:

1. Do you know what the default network is that your Brave wallet is on? When I say network, I'm referring to the blockchains, such as Ethereum, Polygon, etc.

2. I found that the POAP app was very smooth to use - that seems to be the best place view one's collection of POAPs.

I found

If there's any left, I'd like a POAP please and thank you!

Lisa Mills's avatar

I'll email you with the link now, Mark. Many thanks!

Gary Varga's avatar

Thank you, Lisa. Very informative. I am in IT and it was the creators' perspective that I was missing. I too would be interested in a POAP. If only to initiate my journey of NFTs. Which, I confess, starts from a point of general disdain. Good luck with this. I am more open to NFTs than before. Oh, the power of words!!!

Lisa Mills's avatar

Thank you Gary, it's really useful to know where everyone is in their journey. I got my first POAP at the end of March, when I attended a webinar run by Creatokia on the future of Web3 publishing. I'll get your link emailed to you right away.

Gary Varga's avatar

Are they much different for a cover freebie like, for example, a Super Nuker?

Lisa Mills's avatar

Not sure what you mean? Is a POAP like a cover freebie?

Gary Varga's avatar

Just that I remember there being a lot of negative comments about them but they are sort after now. Of course, they didn't have the same creative potential as POAP's do. A badge of honour, perhaps. Interesting as a collectable, for those into that sort of thing. Perhaps a little like collecting medals. I doubt that those collectors claim anything over and above that the historic item is in their collection.

NFTs, on the other hand, have even more potential for creativity by the the looks of it.

Lisa Mills's avatar

Ah yes, see what you mean. Yes, there's definitely a collectible vibe on them, plus that added potential utility.

This link shows you all the POAPs that have been created, it's quite mesmerising to look at all the different designs :)
